Internet Courses - An Overview

Internet courses are designed to give you flexibility by creating an anytime/anywhere learning environment. During your studies in the MBA Program, there is a good chance that you will take at least one course on the Internet. Internet courses utilize current technology to offer additional flexibility without sacrificing quality. As long as you have access to the Internet and the minimum configuration listed below, you can participate in Internet courses. Although you may be able to utilize a computer at work, we recommend you have a computer with Internet access at home in order to give you the optimum amount of flexibility.

Internet courses are the same quality as on-site courses and are not independent study or self-paced courses. The textbooks, problems, cases, assignment due dates, small group work, and other activities are very similar to on-site courses. Please review the minimum configuration listed below for Internet courses prior to registering. If you do not have the minimum hardware and software requirements, we strongly suggest you do not register. Registration for Internet courses is conducted in the same manner as onsite courses.

Online courses are delivered by both the UW Oshkosh MBA Program and the UW System MBA Consortium. A description of each follows:
  • UW Oshkosh MBA Program online courses typically require at least one (and sometimes two) onsite meetings at UW Oshkosh. The onsite meetings are generally held either one or two weekends before the course start date. The required Management and Functional Core Courses are available online at least once every two years and are taught by UW Oshkosh professors. Please be sure to check the supported and recommended browsers for UW Oshksoh D2L courses. In particular, OSX users please note that Firefox is recommended and Netscape is no longer supported. If you use Firefox on either platform, be sure you have enabled copy/paste.

  • University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium -- The UW Oshkosh MBA Program has partnered with the MBA Programs at UW Eau Claire, UW LaCrosse, and UW Parkside to offer both foundation and elective courses online. Professors from all four MBA Programs teach Consortium classes. There are no on-site meetings for Consortium courses. You will officially register and pay your course fees at UW Oshkosh. Check your computer configuration for MBA Consortium online courses.

The remainder of the course will be administered through UW Eau Claire. UWEC will send you an electronic orientation packet to your TitanMail account 5-7 days before the class officially begins. (Please have your textbooks purchased by this time.) This packet will include your login and password for Desire2Learn (D2L) and a HelpDesk phone number. Please note: UWEC and your instructor will refer to Consortium courses using a different numbering system -- specific course information can be found on the course detail pages for each semester.

  • Other than that listed in the table below, no additional software is necessary (unless indicated on the course detail page) although you may be downloading free software such as RealPlayer and Adobe Reader (for pdf files). Starting Fall 2007, the Consortium courses will use MicroSoft Office 2007.

Please be aware that you may not be able to access some aspects of Internet courses at your work site due to corporate internal controls (i.e., firewalls or proxy servers). You may also not be able to perform some of the assignments if you do not have the minimum computer configuration listed below. Check with your employer's Information Technology department for potential access problems. Because of hidden barriers at work sites, we STRONGLY encourage you to use a home computer for Internet courses.

If you register for an Internet course and do not have the minimum computer requirements listed below, you will most likely be on your own to identify and remedy problems. Therefore, if you don't have the minimum computer configuration, it is your best interest not to register for an online course until you have them.

The following table lists both the minimum hardware and software configuration for course participation and suggestions if you are contemplating purchasing a new computer. The Minimum Configuration listed below is a "bare bones" list of components. If your computer barely meets these specifications, you will probably get slow responses from the Internet. The more powerful your CPU, memory, modem, and ISP, the greater the potential for quick responses. Because of slow response time and incompatibilities, you cannot effectively participate in Internet courses if you do not have the minimum configurations listed below:
